Who Gets What?
-- Most single taxpayers will get a rebate of $600.
-- Most married couples who file jointly will get $1,200.
-- You'll get an extra $300 for each child under age 17 for whom you claim a child credit on your 2007 return.
-- Low income seniors and disabled veterans (and their widows) who don't owe enough income tax to qualify for the full rebate can qualify for checks of $300, or $600 if they filed joint returns

You Don't Get One If...
You're a dependent.
Anyone who can be claimed on someone else’s return is banned from receiving a rebate, regardless of how much he or she earned or how much tax he or she paid with a 2007 return.

You make more than $75k as a single or $150k as a married couple.
The phase-out zones that squeeze the value of the rebates as adjusted gross income rises above $75,000 on a single, head of household or married filing separately return, and over $150,000 on a joint return.

You Don't Get One If...
Your spouse doesn't have a Social Security number.
Even if you have a Social Security number yourself, your spouse not having a Social Security number will keep you from getting your tax rebate check.

You Must File to Get a Rebate
The rebates are actually a prepayment of a tax reduction that will go into effect for 2008. The checks that will begin going into the mail in May will be based on information on 2007 tax returns. (If you have your 2007 refund directly deposited into your bank account, the Treasury is supposed to try to direct deposit your rebate, too.) Folks who file after the April 15 deadline, or who file for an extension to put off their deadline until October 15, will also delay their receipt of the stimulus check.

You Don't Get One If...
You don't file a tax return just because your income is low.
Millions of citizens with incomes too low to be required to file a tax return will need to file one anyway to be eligible for a rebate check.

What if I've Moved?
With millions of Americans moving each month (more than 40 million change of address forms were filed with the U.S. Postal Service last year), this is no small matter. And there's plenty of chatter filled with misinformation on the Web. "Experts" are happy to warn that rebate checks will not be forwarded to new addresses. Worries are further fanned by some state revenue department Web sites that warn that state tax refunds will not be forwarded.

Timetable for E-Filers
Taxpayers who signed up to direct deposit their tax rebates get their money sooner than those who chose to be mailed a check. By now, in fact, most of the 45 million or so electronically deposited rebates should have arrived in taxpayers' bank accounts. The final batch -- billions of dollars for taxpayers whose Social Security numbers end in 76 through 99 -- is supposed to be sent no later than May 16.

Finding a Lost Rebate
If you haven't received your rebate within a week of the time it was supposed to have been mailed, check the IRS's Where's My Stimulus Payment tool. To know when your rebate is supposed to be dropped in the mail, check this table.
Even if your rebate doesn't arrive, not all is lost. You'll get your money when you file your 2008 return next Spring. Remember, the rebate is really a prepayment of a tax credit on 2008 returns. Taxpayers who don't get their money this year will collect next spring.
