NexMed Inc. (NEXM) is a biotechnology company engaged in the development of late-stage terbinafine for the treatment of onychomycosis, or erectile dysfunction. The Company also is in phase II for its alprostadil, a drug therapy for the treatment of female sexual arousal disorder and psoriasis.
In the report, the analyst notes:
"The market's leading drug therapies include Viagra, Levitra and Cialis, with Viagra as the most recognized and popular drug among the three. "The market for alternative drug therapies for the treatment of ED changed following an FDA alert in July 2005 that non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAIPON) was reported in 43 cases of varying degrees of vision loss, including blindness, following the use of erectile dysfunction drugs. Updated labeling guidelines were instituted by the FDA regarding these PDE-5 class drugs which included warnings of vision loss. The FDA announcement came on the heels of physicians' concerns regarding cardiovascular risks surrounding the use of the drugs, later confirmed by the FDA."
