Intel completes $884M Wind River acquisition

AP ONLINE
posted: 135 DAYS 7 HOURS AGO

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, said Friday it completed its $884 million acquisition of Wind River Systems Inc.

The deal, first announced in June, is Intel's biggest takeover in nearly a decade.

Alameda, Calif.-based Wind River's software started as a way to help Francis Ford Coppola edit movies, and has since been used in NASA's Mars rovers, fighter-jet control panels, TV set-top boxes and mobile devices.

Buying Wind River is the latest in a series of moves by Intel to control more of the guts of smart phones and other Internet-connected wireless devices. The company already makes the Atom chip for those types of gadgets and is backing a new open-source operating system, Moblin, for mobile devices.

Shares of Intel slipped 12 cents to $18.38 in morning trading.
