CUPERTINO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 06/04/08 -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced
the recipients of its Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowship. The
fellowship is awarded to exceptional graduate students who demonstrate a
desire to work in laboratory research in the information technology
industry and to those investigating innovative solutions to real-world
problems in information security, storage and systems management. After an
extensive selection process, the Symantec Research Labs team has identified
Polo Chau and Junghee Lim to receive full one-year fellowships covering 100
percent of tuition and fees, along with a competitive stipend to fund
ongoing research in their respective areas of expertise.
Symantec's Graduate Fellowship program will pair Chau and Lim with mentors
from Symantec Research Labs. The mentor is a top researcher who can provide
ongoing technical guidance on the recipient's research during their
graduate training as well as during summer internships at Symantec. To
enhance their research efforts, Chau and Lim will also be able to leverage
Symantec's extensive Global Intelligence Network, which monitors Internet
activity across 180 countries.
"Symantec is committed to helping future generations excel in technology,"
said Darren Shou, senior manager of the Symantec Research Labs University
Research Program. "We support the most promising student researchers in
their efforts to combat challenges across the security, storage and systems
management landscape."
Polo Chau is a doctoral candidate in computer science at Carnegie Mellon.
Chau is working on novel machine learning techniques for computer security.
Using data mining techniques and graphs for capturing important connections
among entities, his technology detects suspicious patterns that indicate
fraudsters and accomplices. This technology promises to help proactively
protect computer users from many classes of online fraud.
Junghee Lim is a doctoral candidate in computer science at the University
of Wisconsin-Madison. Lim's research is focused on detecting malicious code
by verifying that programs exhibit only safe behavior. By developing a tool
to generate static analyses for application binaries and a language for the
semantics of instruction sets, her technology opens up new directions in
computer security analysis.
The University Research Program of Symantec Research Labs connects Symantec
to the latest research in software development and to leading professors
and students at U.S. universities. The group's goals include helping to
recruit top Ph.D. students to the company to cultivate the next generation
of technical leadership, bringing researchers to Symantec to talk about
their work to inspire technological innovation, and encouraging and funding
university research in areas of Symantec's interest for longer term
commercialization.
The University Research Program funds research centers at universities
across the nation. These funding efforts support technology research across
a number of key areas for the company, including security, storage, and
even consumer software user interface design.
