EPA, Mercury Marine settle alleged violations

CHICAGO (AP) _ The Mercury Marine Division of recreational equipment maker Brunswick Corp. will pay $25,000 as part of a settlement of alleged clean-air violations, the Environmental Protection Agency said Monday.

EPA Region 5 alleged that the company, at a Fond du Lac, Wis., aluminum production plant, violated a May 2005 consent order requiring it to operate equipment in compliance with EPA regulations.

The agency said the company disclosed in a letter sent last July that it had used non-clean charge in its furnaces.

Calls to Mercury Marine, which makes outboard engines, and Brunswick were not immediately returned.

Shares of Brunswick fell 23 cents to $13.14 in afternoon trading.
