AMR shares hit five-year low after traffic report

NEW YORK (AP) _ Shares of American Airlines operator AMR Corp. touched a five-year low Thursday after the government said U.S. airlines traffic fell in March.

The stock lost 87 cents, or 14.3 percent, to $5.22 after setting the $4.79 low earlier in the session. The last time shares were near that level was May 2003.

The Transportation Department's Bureau of Transportation Statistics said Thursday that U.S. airlines carried 0.4 percent fewer passengers in March, compared with the year-ago period.

An apparent bright spot for the Dallas-based company may be that international passengers jumped 7 percent during the month. American carried the most international passengers during the period.

Meanwhile, oil prices jumped again Thursday. Light, sweet crude for July delivery rose 36 cents to settle at $136.74 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The profitability of airline operators is closely linked to jet-fuel costs.

Late Wednesday American Airlines raised its fuel surcharge by $20 to $150 per round trip for many routes.
