Hewlett-Packard Meets Street Estimates

SAN FRANCISCO (Feb. 18) - Hewlett-Packard Co.'s quarterly profit dropped 13 percent, and sales ticked up just 1 percent, as even the technology company's cash-cow printer ink business was hobbled by the recession.
The world's top seller of personal computers also cut its 2009 guidance, but it was still in line with Wall Street's expectations.
HP shares fell $1.08, or 3.2 percent, to $33 in extended trading, after closing down 26 cents during the regular trading session, before the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company reported its earnings.
Crippled technology spending slammed all but one of HP's major business lines, including PCs and servers. Only HP's services division, which bulked up with its $13.9 billion acquisition of Electronic Data Systems, saw an increase.
Services also have been strong for rival IBM Corp., since corporations are trying to save money by outsourcing some of their technology chores.
HP earned $1.85 billion, or 75 cents per share, in the three months that ended Jan. 31. That compares with profit of $2.13 billion, or 80 cents per share, a year ago.
Without one-time costs, HP earned 93 cents per share, matching analyst estimates.
HP's sales of $28.8 billion fell short of Wall Street's forecast by more than $3 billion, however. Analysts were expecting $31.9 billion in revenue. Without currency fluctuations, HP said its quarterly sales increased 4 percent over last year.
The pain of tighter budgets was felt across nearly all of HP's businesses.
Sales for the printer and ink division, which contributes more than 40 percent of HP's operating profit, fell 19 percent to $6 billion. That includes a 7 percent decline in supplies, a typically strong area that includes things like ink cartridges, which are among HP's biggest moneymakers.
The personal computer division was also wounded, with sales falling 19 percent to $8.8 billion.
HP's services division more than doubled to $8.7 billion, mostly due to the addition of EDS. HP is cutting 24,600 jobs as part of that deal.
HP predicted that it would earn between $3.76 and $3.88 per share in 2009, excluding one-time costs. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting profit of $3.77 per share on that basis.
The financial crisis has mauled PC sales for all the big manufacturers, but HP managed to eke out some gains last year. HP owned nearly a fifth of the worldwide PC market in 2008, having expanded its lead over rivals Dell Inc., Acer Inc., Lenovo Group Ltd. and Toshiba Corp., according to the latest data from research firm IDC.

I have a question to mr Wollfman4U, how do you like the warm weather there in the Californiaication land of the great west coast? When those warm breezes wash in off the ocean and you get to walk the coast line looking for shells, you will remember what you are paying for to live in California, THE WARM WEATHER costs a lot. Have you ever figured your daily cost to live there? Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to PAY THERE!

Sorry so many of you folks are having problems with your investments in SO CALLED TECHnology, which is really just a catch phrase for FLEECING. The words should be changed to reflect the desired out come= FLEECEOLOGY, now that says it better. Common sense should tell you that the developing world will only get sales when your expensive graphically enhanced compact electronic crappy devices get bought. Productivity is left for the Professional services with access terminals, like EDS, CSC and the IBM'ish type of companies. The consumer is just the poor unsuspecting source of funding to provide jobs to the emerging economies of the world. There is no other way to get money to those ppl except for them to talk you out of, and look how well that is working. You still buy into their plan and you will continue to do $o. You buy electronic when yours breaks about every 18-24mo. Figure your cost now

I agree with JIMINBOXERS, my new computer, only 3 months old, froze up and I eventually called the help line. Spoke to a man in India for over 40 minutes and my computer is still frozen!! I could not understand half of what he was saying and he eventually put on his supervisor. The only thing he was concerned about was if the tech was "nice". My IT guy checked out my computer and told me that the hard-drive is shot!! Thanks HP!! Hope your profits will reflect the poor performance of your product and tech support next quarter!!

WOLFMANN4U 09:56:41 PM Feb 17 2009

California's economy is falling apart. Arnold the Governator pissed off all the Feinstein, and Boxer, Pelosi liberals so now they are going to raise taxes, 12 cents a gallon on gas, another 1% sales tax, double the car registration fees, 5% surcharge on state income tax and more, and Obama wants to give us a tax break so we can give it all back to California. And all the illegal aliens are all coming here to take all the Obama new construction jobs. How is this going to help our economy? I am looking at moving to Vegas. The Wolfman
