PORTLAND, Ore. (Feb. 5) - Kellogg Co. said Thursday that it will drop its endorsement deal with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps following his acknowledgment he inhaled from a marijuana pipe.

The 23-year-old swimming star has apologized for his "regrettable" behavior and "bad judgment" after a photo appeared Sunday in the British tabloid News of the World that showed Phelps inhaling from a marijuana pipe.
Most of his major sponsors, such as Visa Inc., Speedo, luxury Swiss watchmaker Omega and sports beverage PureSport's maker Human Performance Labs, stood by the athlete following the news, even if they didn't condone his behavior.
But Battle Creek, Mich.-based cereal and snack maker Kellogg said Phelps's behavior is "not consistent with the image of Kellogg."
Phelps's agent was not immediately available to comment.
Kellogg had contracts with Phelps and other Olympic athletes to support its association with the U.S. Olympic team. The company said in a statement that it will not renew its contract with Phelps, which expires at the end of February.

The company did not renew its deal with the US Olympic Team, which expired in December.
Kellogg would not disclose the value of its deal with Phelps.
But experts have said that after Phelps won eight gold medals, he scored millions in endorsement deals, including the one that placed him on boxes of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes boxes.

OF course if there were pictures of Phelps chugging a Budweiser he would be applauded for being "the all American boy". and alcohol related deaths reach nearly 400,000 a year in the USA. but smoking a bud in a party setting is scandalous and abhorrent ? What a hypocritical and trivial society America is. I bet nearly everyone who isn't Mormon or Kathy Lee Gifford has at some point taken a hit of weed at a party. Big Deal - no addiction and no death. Believe me there are important issues in this country and Phelps smoking a bong is not one of them.I for one will boycott Kellogg. General Mills has plenty of cereals that I like. Watch the name brand when buying your cereals.

Kellogg's was not going to renew the contract with Phelps under any circumstances, they just used the bong incident to justify a business decision that had already been made. As the story said, they had already dropped the Olympic team. It is just a bit of grand standing on the part of Kelloggs. I called their customer service number, 1-800-962-1413, which confirmed that the contract was ending and likely would not be renewed. I said that they should apologize to the public for their hypocritical, deceptive stance. My family will start purchasing their products when they come clean with their true motivation.

Good for Kellogs, they need to send a message to all the pot heads out there.

I wonder if Kellogs holds EVERY employee to such high standards? If they fired every employee that smoked pot when they were young would there be anyone left to make the cereal? If they fired all the coke heads in Marketing would there be anyone left to sell their cereal? if they fired all the alcoholics on the BofD would there be anyone left to sit in judgement of Phelps?I say boycott Kellogs, stop buying their products, and got to your kitchen now and take all their products out and take them to a homeless shelter.....restock with Post or the store brand! Wonder how many people in the firing decision of Phelps are cheating on their spouses? I guess thats a whole different image, and they don't mind that one!So, the boycott begins.....I hope Tony the Tiger gets so hungry he has to eat Snap, Crackle, and Pop! Oh yeah Kellogs.....you should fire the Keebler elves.....they seem kinda gay....i mean a bunch of little men all living in a tree together with no women?????
