Caterpillar Will Rehire If Stimulus Passes

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (Feb. 11) - President Barack Obama said Wednesday that heavy-equipment maker Caterpillar has informed him it will rehire some of the thousands of workers it has laid off in recent weeks if Congress passes an economic stimulus bill.
"The time for talk has passed," Obama said.
The president's travel to pitch the urgency of the stimulus plan was his third day in a row to leave Washington. On Thursday, he goes to Peoria, Ill., to visit a Caterpillar manufacturing plant.
The world's largest maker of mining and construction machinery announced more than 22,000 job cuts last month amid waning demand for its products.

But Obama said the company told him Wednesday it would hire back some of those workers if the legislation passes. As House and Senate negotiators worked to reconcile differences between competing versions of the legislation, Obama spoke during a visit to a highway construction site here just outside of Washington.

"You don't need to travel very far from that debate to see why this plan is both urgent and essential for our recovery," he said.
With bulldozers visible behind him, Obama aimed — as he has all week — to build momentum by demonstrating real-world consequences of both the economic downturn and provisions in the bill aimed at helping create jobs and rejuvenate the economy.
As an example of a shovel-ready project that could get a jump-start from the bill, Obama cited an unfinished stretch of the Fairfax County Parkway connector. It serves the new east campus of National Geospatial Agency and is seen as key to easing horrible traffic congestion. The project's initial phases are under way but more money is needed to finish it.
"We're surrounded by unmet needs and unfinished business — in our schools and in our schools and our roads, in the systems we employ to treat the sick, in the energy we use to power our homes," Obama said. "And that's the core of my plan, putting people to work doing the work that America needs done."
Obama also traveled to Indiana and Florida this week to pitch the stimulus plan.
"So much depends on what we do at this moment," the president said. "It's not just about the future of my administration. It's about the future of our economy and our country."

Not quite what the manager said. At a subsequent interview he said that because of the construction projects, some people might eventually be rehired, but he also said that in the near future that there would be further layoffs at Caterpillar.Oops....So, if President Obama makes a false statement, based on the Daily Kos, he would be a (four letter word, begins with the letter " l ", ends with the letter " r ".

Of the "20,000 laid off" a majority of those were upper management buyouts and will not be coming back. The only actual lay offs were the ones announced about 3 weeks back, and even those don't take effect until April 13th. PLenty of time to get the package passed and notify those employees that the lay off is cancelled, that way Obama and Owens come out smelling of roses for "saving" those jobs

I saw this on the news last night. Why isn't the part where the CEO said there would be thousands more lay offs needed to stabilize the company? If they are going to report, report the whole story.

I am a tax payer not by choice but because it is the law, one of the situation that turns my stomach is how when we are in a enconomic trouble how it all falls back on the tax payer that get no help, and is laid off and put out their on their own to make it. and I feel that some of the companies are laying off people just to make it look like they need help from the stimulus package. stop hurting the little people.

Well I say good job and two thumbs up to Caterpillar!! It's rare to find a company that seems to genuinely care about their employees.

The CEO of CAT denied making this remark to Obama!! He said more will be laid off before anyone is hired back. Obama just made up another lie

I'm not sure exactly where you all are getting your information about this stimulas plan, but since it can be agreed that we are in trying times @ this point, and the only organization large enough to help is our government, I think this stimulas plan might actually have a leg to stand on. For the individuals who feel that our government should not come up w/ some form of stimulas bill that will benefit the everyday american should get their heads out of the sand. The stimulas bill that he is trying to get passed is not set up for more tax cuts, but in fact to offer various jobs to improve our infrastructure which in turn will build ouir economy. If all you wish to do is complain abouit the stimulus bill then the bottom line is SHUT UP!

I am not sure my comment went through but I going to post it again. Quit giving money that the tax payers and our children will have to pay for. My husband is not working for almost six months, we saved some money, maybe we will be okay. This America I will work 6 days a week if I have to save our Home, but I would never ask for the President to give me a dime or a penny. I am concerned about that we as Country, we are going to experience another Jimmy Carter. The people need to take their Country back and we will one day.
