After Steep Job Cuts, AT&T's Hiring Again

NEW YORK (March 10) - AT&T Inc. said Tuesday it will add nearly 3,000 jobs this year and invest between $17 billion and $18 billion to drive growth by enhancing wireless and broadband networks to provide more coverage.
The capital spending plans are in line with the $17.7 billion Dallas-based AT&T said it spent in 2007, but still below the $19.7 billion it spent in 2008.
AT&T said it will add jobs in 2009 to meet continued demand for broadband services, but will still cut jobs in other areas, as previously announced, because of a tough economy and a shift toward wireless and broadband.
In December, AT&T said it will cut 12,000 jobs, or about 4 percent of its work force. The job cuts began in December and will continue throughout 2009.

"Demand for broadband continues to grow as new applications emerge and customers embrace them, leading to data traffic on our network growing more than 50 percent year-over-year on average," said Chief Executive Randall Stephenson.
AT&T said it will expand its third-generation, or 3G, mobile broadband service to 20 new markets this year. The company also said it plans to expand in Oklahoma by adding at least 30 new cell sites in the state this year, in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Shawnee, among other cities.
Shares of the company gained $1.30, or 6 percent, to close at $23.02.

The only commodity that I don't want to see improve is oil. I would like to see oil remain down or better yet keep plunging until all oil price reaches 50-cent on the barrel; until all oil companies and OPEC goes bankrupt.

The economy is begining to show signs of improvement and a bottom is near. Look for the bottom to occur around June with slow improvement throughout the rest of the year and into 2010. Unemployment will remain at around 9-10% however will slowly improve with time. Begin picking stocks that are resilient in difficult times. Oil remains cheap, and car sales are slightly up. Several companies are beginning to beat estimates on sales. Pessimistic remarks only delay the recovery. 93% of mortgages are being maintained, and 9 out of 10 workers still have jobs. The economy sensai has spoken.

Most comments here can be attributed to most of the cell companies. For Pete sake, I always thought it was hilarious that a communications company can't communicate well. Get over outsourcing people, it is a fact of life. Instead of fussing realize if one job is outsource there is a new job here in a different area. Always be reinventing yourself in the market. And a sure sign that we aren't in a depression, complaining about a company creating jobs. Call any job Sh**^y. I've got to pay my bills to, I realize a long time ago that having faith in a company will not pay the bills. Nor will demanding large contracts when the marketplace can't handle it. These are businesses and you agree to work for them, they are not public socialized firms. Thank God. To me in this economy the crappy ones fold and the good ones stay in business. If you even have a job now don't complain, if you aren't happy take the opportunity to find another or become your own business.Personally, I own a business,

AmericanMade88 02:16:27 AM Mar 11 2009

People take crap jobs bc the companies don't tell people what it's really like when u sign on for it ... Then they get there and unless your management where they don't do anything except hit keys on a keyboard all day and hand out orders they then realize wow this job sux......That could be why these companies dont keep people around very long....There fly by night jobs when people out what its like they leave and every month they ( the company ) are looking for new people ....It's time the real workers of america took a stand and say hey we dont need this and were not gonna take it anymore ..........
