Are You a Smart Driver?

Think you're smarter than the average driver? When's the last time you took a written drivers test? When you were 16? How do you think you'd score if you took it again today? Take the GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test and see if you pass with flying colors, or if you could use a little brushing up.

Do you think you're a smart driver? Take this quiz and find out!

A pedestrian is crossing your lane but there is no crosswalk. You should:

  • Make sure the pedestrian sees you, but continue driving
  • Stop and let the pedestrian cross the street
  • Carefully drive around the pedestrian

When driving in adverse conditions, the proper speed to travel is:

  • The posted speed limit
  • 55 mph
  • 65 mph
  • Only as fast as is safe to drive

A traffic light with a flashing red signal means?

  • Yield
  • Stop
  • Caution

You see a flashing yellow traffic signal at an up coming intersection. The flashing yellow light means:

  • Stop before entering the intersection as long as you can do so safely
  • Stop; yield to all cross traffic before crossing the intersection
  • Slow down and cross the intersection carefully

A solid yellow line, on your side of the center line, means:

  • Reduce speed
  • Traffic light ahead
  • Do not pass

When you approach a stopped school bus with flashing red lights, you should:

  • Stop when approaching a bus from either the front or the rear
  • Slow when approaching a bus from the front or rear
  • Stop only when approaching a bus from the front
  • Stop only when approaching a bus from the rear

If, while driving, a tire suddenly blows out, you should:

  • Grip the steering wheel firmly, slow down, and exit from the traffic lanes
  • Pump the brakes rapidly
  • Brake hard and steer toward the right edge of the roadway

You may pass on the right of another vehicle when:

  • When traveling on a multi-lane highway carrying two or more lanes of traffic in the same direction
  • The other vehicle is making or about to make a left turn, when a lane is provided to pass on the right
  • All of the above

When making right or left turns, a driver should signal _____ before the turn?

  • 100 feet
  • 50 feet
  • 35 feet
  • 5 feet

A diamond shaped sign means:

  • Yield
  • Stop
  • Warning

You drive defensively when you:

  • Always put one car length between you and the car ahead
  • Look only at the car in front of you while driving
  • Keep your eyes moving to look for possible hazards

When you tailgate other drivers (drive close to their rear bumper):

  • You can frustrate the other drivers and make them angry
  • Your actions cannot result in a traffic citation
  • You help reduce traffic congestion

You may drive off of the paved roadway to pass another vehicle:

  • If the shoulder is wide enough to accommodate your vehicle
  • If the vehicle ahead of you is turning left
  • Under no circumstances

When you are merging onto the freeway, you should be driving:

  • At or near the same speed as the traffic on the freeway
  • 5 to 10 miles per hour slower than the traffic on the freeway
  • The posted speed limit for traffic on the freeway

When driving in fog, you should use your:

  • Fog lights only
  • High beams
  • Low beams

Under most conditions what is a safe following distance?

  • 2 seconds
  • 10 seconds
  • 20 seconds

There is an emergency vehicle coming from behind you with emergency lights on and flashing. You should:

  • Slow down and keep moving
  • Speed up and get out of the way
  • Maintain your speed
  • Pull over to the right and stop

When you approach a traffic signal displaying a steady yellow light, you must:

  • Go through the intersection before it turns red
  • Stop if it is safe to do so
  • Be prepared to stop
  • Slow down and proceed with caution

In bad weather, you should make your car easier for others to see by:

  • Turning on your headlights
  • Turning on your emergency flashers

A traffic signal with yellow does not mean stop! How can they say if the light is yellow you must stop? You must make a sound judgment and decide whether it is safe enough to stop, but we all know yellow means prepare to stop, it is not the same as red! This test had some inaccurate and misleading information. I pride myself on remembering everything from the driver manual 10 years ago.

I have some problems with this 'test' If there is no cross walk, the pedestrian must cross only when safe, not when they feel like it. Stopping for a school bus is always the smart, safe, and legal thing to do, unless it's a divided roadway, then you need not stop if it is on the other side. You Cannot pass on the Right!! I don't understand how this question can be valid. Granted, if someone is in a turn lane, that is OK, but you will be pulled over for passing on the Right on a highway. it is not legal, at least not in all states--this question really upset me! You should signal 100 feet or more!! If traveling at higher speeds, or approaching a bad intersection, the more advanced notice to others, the better. When you are merging onto a highway, you should be traveling at both the speed of traffic and the posted speed limit. If you enter with traffic going 20 over, how is that safe or legal?! A traffic signal with yellow does not mean stop! How can they say if the light is ye

I did pretty good on this test and I have been driving for years in FL. But you gotta admit that 2 second rules does not and I mean does not work in FL - have you seen all the Blue Hairs driving in this state...... It takes them more than two seconds to remember they are holding the steering wheel and supposed to be driving! I have learned to give the extra seconds of space for my safety......

Another thought, don't like it when people climb up your back end, when you cannot even see there head lights. If traveling, I then slow down slightly, forces them to go around me. When at a stop light and they do that, I wait just a bit longer when the light turns green, to give them a little time to realize, I am not rushing because of them.I have been bumped a few times on a slow creeper at stop lights. It infuriates me. But I don't bother looking, you never know if it is a set up.

I don't go by seconds either, I go by judging car lengths. I usually hang back 3 car lengths. Enough to see around and in front of the car in front of me. I also drive to the right or in the middle of a 3 lane highway. I then have time to react and not worry about losing control of my car.

I agree in that the 2 sec. rule is wrong. I don't by counting seconds, I just stay far enough back just in case someone just suddenly stops without warning. Another thing, I don't pull out when someone approaching has a turning signal on. They may not actually be turning at my intersection or may have left theirs on by accident. It could also be a trick for you to get into an accident and guess who would be wrong, you. I have seen this happen. Lastly, I see all the time where out on an open road with no coming but me, someone pulls out in front of me from a driveway or side road at the last second. Why do they do this? Is their failure to judge oncoming traffic's s speed or they just want someone to hit them so they can collect some insurance money?Jay Herrod - The Skirt Man

Yeah don't try the passing on the right in PA if a cop can see you. Also the tailgating question can lead to a citation (reckless driving). Not that I have ever got caught, but I just want to let you know the quiz is wrong.

Here's a good question! While driving your Corvette Z06 at 190mph and a cop is following too close with his red lights flashing, should you? (a) turn your stereo up, (b) dial 911 and complain about tail-gaiting, (c) finish your beer and call your lawyer, or (d) shift into 6th gear and give him the finger.

If your in car and the examiner gets in the passengers side, and he or she says start the car, "YOU SAY,COULD YOU PLEASE PUT YOUR SEABELT ON",before you even put the keys in the ignition, adjust or readjust your mirrors, this might sound crazy and it looks like your kissen a... but they eat that stuff up,and look at all the time thats passing by.Believe me,their thinking this kid did her homework, while they sit there, putting the points on the paper.AND one other thing"DON'T SAY ONE WORD TO THEM" and in about ten minutes BINGO you've got what you been waiting for. P.S. Tie your hair back!uRuR
