Are You a Smart Driver?

Think you're smarter than the average driver? When's the last time you took a written drivers test? When you were 16? How do you think you'd score if you took it again today? Take the GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test and see if you pass with flying colors, or if you could use a little brushing up.

Do you think you're a smart driver? Take this quiz and find out!

A pedestrian is crossing your lane but there is no crosswalk. You should:

  • Make sure the pedestrian sees you, but continue driving
  • Stop and let the pedestrian cross the street
  • Carefully drive around the pedestrian

When driving in adverse conditions, the proper speed to travel is:

  • The posted speed limit
  • 55 mph
  • 65 mph
  • Only as fast as is safe to drive

A traffic light with a flashing red signal means?

  • Yield
  • Stop
  • Caution

You see a flashing yellow traffic signal at an up coming intersection. The flashing yellow light means:

  • Stop before entering the intersection as long as you can do so safely
  • Stop; yield to all cross traffic before crossing the intersection
  • Slow down and cross the intersection carefully

A solid yellow line, on your side of the center line, means:

  • Reduce speed
  • Traffic light ahead
  • Do not pass

When you approach a stopped school bus with flashing red lights, you should:

  • Stop when approaching a bus from either the front or the rear
  • Slow when approaching a bus from the front or rear
  • Stop only when approaching a bus from the front
  • Stop only when approaching a bus from the rear

If, while driving, a tire suddenly blows out, you should:

  • Grip the steering wheel firmly, slow down, and exit from the traffic lanes
  • Pump the brakes rapidly
  • Brake hard and steer toward the right edge of the roadway

You may pass on the right of another vehicle when:

  • When traveling on a multi-lane highway carrying two or more lanes of traffic in the same direction
  • The other vehicle is making or about to make a left turn, when a lane is provided to pass on the right
  • All of the above

When making right or left turns, a driver should signal _____ before the turn?

  • 100 feet
  • 50 feet
  • 35 feet
  • 5 feet

A diamond shaped sign means:

  • Yield
  • Stop
  • Warning

You drive defensively when you:

  • Always put one car length between you and the car ahead
  • Look only at the car in front of you while driving
  • Keep your eyes moving to look for possible hazards

When you tailgate other drivers (drive close to their rear bumper):

  • You can frustrate the other drivers and make them angry
  • Your actions cannot result in a traffic citation
  • You help reduce traffic congestion

You may drive off of the paved roadway to pass another vehicle:

  • If the shoulder is wide enough to accommodate your vehicle
  • If the vehicle ahead of you is turning left
  • Under no circumstances

When you are merging onto the freeway, you should be driving:

  • At or near the same speed as the traffic on the freeway
  • 5 to 10 miles per hour slower than the traffic on the freeway
  • The posted speed limit for traffic on the freeway

When driving in fog, you should use your:

  • Fog lights only
  • High beams
  • Low beams

Under most conditions what is a safe following distance?

  • 2 seconds
  • 10 seconds
  • 20 seconds

There is an emergency vehicle coming from behind you with emergency lights on and flashing. You should:

  • Slow down and keep moving
  • Speed up and get out of the way
  • Maintain your speed
  • Pull over to the right and stop

When you approach a traffic signal displaying a steady yellow light, you must:

  • Go through the intersection before it turns red
  • Stop if it is safe to do so
  • Be prepared to stop
  • Slow down and proceed with caution

In bad weather, you should make your car easier for others to see by:

  • Turning on your headlights
  • Turning on your emergency flashers
  • Turning on your parking lights
  • Flash your high beams

The best way to keep from hydroplaning is to:

  • Turn to avoid puddles
  • Apply the brakes firmly
  • Slow down when on wet roads

This Test Really SUCKS BIG TIME

Cfells12 05:40:54 PM Jul 14 2008

What is meant by a two second following distance is that you will reach a given point in the road two seconds after the car in front of you crosses that point. For example,as you watch the vehicle you are following pass a sign next to the road, Count off one-thousand, two thousand. If you reach the sign before you finish counting the two thousand, you are following too close. It doesn't matter how fast traffic is moving because the distance between cars will automatically increase itself as the speed increases two seconds will always be two seconds. There is no need to figure anything out,or worry about car lengths, etc. You will always have enough time to brake and maneuver, because you have two seconds to hit your brakes before you get to the same spot where the driver in front of you was when they hit their brakes.

What they mean by two seconds following distance is that you will reach a given point on the road two seconds after the car in front of you reaches that point. Note when the car in front of you goes by a landmark like a sign or an object by the side of the road and count off two seconds. If you reach that object before you can count two thousand, then you are too close to the vehicle in front of you. Speed has nothing to do with it, because you are always two seconds behind the car in front of you. If everyone left a two second space between cars, there would be virtually no rear end collisions, but only about one in ten drivers does this. I would guess 90% of people are tailgating to one degree or another. People who are not going faster than the car to their right need to move over to the right lane. People who do not understand the left lane is for passing only are just as much to blame as the people riding their bumpers.

If you are maintaing a distance of one car length for every ten MPH you are driving then 2 sec. may be enough of a reaction time. Stupid question.Tailgating can and often does cause accidents. Which is more important than pissing off the driverStupid answer to question, If a light is yellow it may turn red in a split second. Did you see the light turn yellow. If you are not prepared to stop you are a fool. stupid answer. I guess you have figured out I missed three questions. I have driven in every state in this union. New Mexico has the dumbest drivers hands down. Also 40% of the drivers in NM do not have insurance.

yeah... in Texas it is considered good etiquette to pull over on theright and let cars pass you on the left, esp on country roads...anyone know if this is legal?

SternFan07 02:34:57 AM Jul 13 2008

2 seconds is not enough reaction time!!!

L2R1DeOrio 01:34:20 AM Jul 13 2008

What dip shit made this test becuase some questions actually contradict eachother such as when a solid yeloow light is on it says slow down and proceed with caution but when its a flashing yellow light you stop ......personally like other people said before the law has some preference because you can be doing the right thing while some other shitty driver is ******* it up out there but its what would you do. As someone as else mentioned 100 feet before making the signal ....well if your going 50mph ur traveling at about 75 feet per second so i highly doubt anyone behind you will react in two seconds .........and im pretty sure in most conditions 2 seconds isnt enough reaction time because judging by the way i see massachusetts, connecicut, rhode island, and maine drivers ull need at least 5 seconds but speed is completely relevent and im not saying all those drivers are bad just most 95% of all NH drivers know how to use their turn signals and do not shift lane to lane or cutting pe

dalcowboys722 11:36:06 PM Jul 12 2008

2 seconds isnt a distance, i get the point, but poorly worded

Westcoastmikea 06:28:53 AM Jul 12 2008
