It takes more than big earnings to land a star on Forbes' annual celebrity power list. Rather, the Forbes Celebrity 100 factors in both total earnings and an ability to generate buzz, as measured by TV, print and radio mentions; Web hits; and cover appearances in 55 major magazines. Here are 10 "A-list" stars who didn't make the cut this year.

Hanks' departure from the Celebrity 100 is one of the many casualties of the Hollywood writers' strike. He was all set to reprise his high-profile -- and highly lucrative -- role as Dr. Robert Langdon in Sony's silver screen adaptation of Angels & Demons, the prequel to Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, earlier this year, but production was shelved to await script revisions.

The funnyman failed to lure blockbuster audiences -- or blockbuster buzz -- this past year. His silver screen offering I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which co-stars Kevin James, was panned by critics and brought in just $120 million at the U.S. box office. His other flick, the far more serious Reign Over Me, garnered only $20 million.

The Fantastic Four beauty had little trouble garnering press, thanks to her ever-expanding baby bump and under-the-radar nuptials, but viewers didn't come as easily. Her most recent flicks -- the thrillers The Eye and Awake and the comedy Good Luck Chuck -- all fizzled at the box office.

The blond bombshell suffered at the box office last year. Her most recent star vehicle, the romantic comedy Blonde Ambition, earned less than $50 per theater (ouch!) in its opening weekend. She'll try again with the upcoming Major Movie Star, where she plays a spoiled actress who accidentally enlists in the army.

The senior statesman of the Blue Collar Comedy tour is still a powerhouse on the stand-up circuit, but his Fox reality series, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?, fell in the ratings during its second season. Only 9 million viewers tuned in, compared with 12.5 million the prior season.

Tom Hanks is an elite actor. Even though ''The Da Vinci Code'' made tons of money to me it was far from a classic. You are only as good as your last movie. There are sooooooo many elite actors that are comparable to the greats from the past. Russell Crowe,Philip Seymour Hoffman,Edward Norton,Paul Giamatti,Johnny Depp, etc come to mind. And Nicholson,DeNiro,Hoffman and Pacino have not lost any gravitas. Movies are now so special effect oriented that the scripts lack depth. Plus this trend to use so many huge ensembles of actors dilute the product.

Movie actors today simply do not compare to the actors of the 40s, 50s, 60s.....
Actors then were simply legends, icons, so diversified, marvelous and talented...
Tom Hanks is a good actor however, he simpy does not compare to the great actors of so many years ago... (Bogart, Stewart, Peck, Pat Obrien, Spencer Tracy... etc)

This article is unbelievably stupid. So he doesn't generate headlines. I doubt if a producer or director care about that when they want the box office to be high.
