One other thing to watch out for is this. When you are buying something with a credit card at a busy place with alot of cash registers every were. Make sure you get your credit card back and not someone elses back by mistake or on purpose for that matter. You have alot of "sticky fingers" out there. Big amounts of money talk to people who work at places. So it is very easy to get a card back that isnt yours or one that isnt even real. Make sure it is yours you get back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BEWARE> They also take your information from the bank card that you provided at the gasoline stations, or local store ATM's. Check your checking account daily, if you can.

I agree with what circustwo said, but we need to go one step further. We need to fast track biometrics. Iris scan, digital fingerprint, or other forms of idenitification that would make it impssible for someone to be an imposter. While we are at it anyone caught in identity theift should get a minimum of 10 years in prison.

There's too much trust concerning computers. Everyone leaks information and personal details throughout their lives and computer related surfing. I read an article in a big Time magazine...Chinese hackers have been accused by many nation's corporations and defense systems of stealing plans and ideas and even guarded info....of course when question they said these are false accusations whiched sounded more like some cold war mentality type of accusation. Be careful out there... (Personally, I didn't believe them).

Possibly the best scam turned up in my E Mail today. An E Mail from the IRS with a very official looking IRS form complete with IRS numbers etc. It told me I beenn audited and was due an additrional refund of $184.00 that they would put into a credit card account etc. All I had to do was fill out a VERY officlal looking IRS form giving them my SS number, my back account number my ATM PIN number my credit card number, my phone and address. It was obviously cut and pasted using real IRS logos etc. Anyone that knows how the IRS operates will know that it is a scam but unfortunatly there are pleanty of people that will fall for it.

BEWARE, there's more than just Financial Identity Theft. There's also Driver's License Identity Theft, Social Security Identity Theft, Medical Identity Theft and Character or Criminal Identity Theft! Each of these can cause you problems beyond your wildest dreams if your identity is stolen from you!

All credit card machines should require a password that cannot be read. Gee whiz, it will probably take at least 4 seconds longer but I wouldn't mind.
All phone transactions with a touchtone password that cannot be seen.
If you write your password down leave off numbers or letters in front or back that you will not forget.
All walk in transations would require picture ID and password.
