Obtaining a Credit Report

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, amended a few years ago to beef up consumer privacy rules, you are legally entitled to obtain your credit report from a credit reporting agency. This includes receiving a list of everyone that has requested your report.

If you are denied credit based on information in your credit report (the creditor must provide a reason for denial), you have 60 days from the day you receive a denial notice to receive a free copy of the credit report. Starting in 2004, the law also entitles you to receive a free credit report every 12 months.

Of course, you can also pay to obtain a credit report anytime. The three major credit reporting agencies, or credit bureaus, are Equifax, Experian and Trans Union (Dun & Bradstreet Credit Services provides credit reports of businesses):

A few states, including California and Connecticut, cap the fee at a slightly lower level.

Credit bureaus also offer a variety of bundled services related to your credit report. For example, Equifax and Experian presently offered a combination of your credit score and credit report for $14.95-$15.50.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act also entitles you to contact each or all of the major credit bureaus (and Innovis, a fourth credit bureau) and request them to stop sending you card solicitations and related offers. For more information, call 888-5OPTOUT (567-8688).

I just went through this yesterday. I went to freecredit.com and requested my credit reports. I had to provide my credit number for a service I didn't want. I did it with the understanding that I had 9 days to credit and not be charged for the service. I moved forward and provided the information to obtain my credit reports and received a message that I needed a code and it would be sent 7-10 days. This is a scam. I have 9 days to cancel the service; however, I have to wait 7-10 days before I receive the code to obtain my credit reports. I called the 1-800# and cancel everything. I also sent an email explaining that this is a scam so that there company can charge your credit card for at less one month of service. I think it's best to request the credit report directly from the credit companies.

This is about the question about getting a credit score from those so-called "free credit reports. If you look at them, you will see you have to sign up for their services which charges per month. They are not really "for free"

Anytime you have to enter a credit card number, be assured they have plenty of $1 charges. Even with the Real Estate research sites that state "free" they aren't. They will sign you up for everything under the sun. Magazines etc,. numerous calls to cancel. Makes us wonder how it is we get so worn down from entering information that finally we enter our credit card #. Worst mistake. And a definite "not free" once that is requested! Just don't do it!

I would like to know my credit, but I will never give out the informationyou ask for. I will not give you my social secutiry number I will not give you my credit card name or number. I will not give y ou my date of birth You will not find anyone too responsive to the service you are offering and later selling the information or giving it away or exchanging. Why don't you try something a little more simpler.

YOU CAN CONTACT TRUECREDIT.COM, AND GET THE FREE CREDIT SCORE. AFTER YOU GET THE SCORE, CANCEL THE MEMBERSHIP TO TRUE CREDIT.COM, AND YOU PAY NOTHING.

This report is not what I expected. I don't want it; I got nothing out of it. You cheat the public by saying "free" when it is just another way to scalp money from people.
