A panel of distinguished Supreme Court advocates, each of whom argued one or more cases in 2008-2009, will analyze the impact of the recent high court term at a special event, Sizing Up the 2008-2009 Supreme Court Term: A Practitioner's View, hosted by Incisive Media’s Legal Times. The symposium will take place from 3:00-5:00 PM on Monday, July 6 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. The panel discussion will be moderated by Tony Mauro, the Supreme Court correspondent for Incisive Media , and will be followed by a networking wine-and-cheese reception. Click here for more details, and to register for the event.
The panelists for the event will be:
Gregory Coleman, Partner, Yetter, Warden & Coleman
Coleman argued two of the highest-profile cases before the Supreme Court this term: Ricci v. DeStefano, the New Haven firefighters case, and Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District Number One v. Holder, the challenge to a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. Now a partner at Yetter, Warden & Coleman in Austin, Texas, Coleman is the former solicitor general of Texas and clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas.
David C. Frederick, Partner, Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evans & Figel, P.L.L.C.
Frederick, a veteran appellate litigator, argued three cases this term: Altria Group Inc. v. Good and Wyeth v. Levine, both addressing issues of federal pre-emption, and 14 Penn Plaza LLC v. Pyett, an arbitration dispute. He is a partner at Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evans & Figel in Washington, D.C., and the author of the 2003 book “Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy.” Frederick was previously an assistant to the solicitor general and clerked for Justice Byron White.
Pamela Harris, Of Counsel, O'Melveny & Myers
Harris is an experienced appellate advocate who specializes in public interest and criminal defense cases. This term, Harris argued for the respondent in Pleasant Grove City v. Summum, a major First Amendment case. Harris is a former law clerk to Justice John Paul Stevens, and is co-director of the Harvard Law School Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy Clinic. After July 1, she will be director of the Supreme Court Institute at Georgetown University Law Center.
Neal Katyal, Deputy Solicitor General
Katyal has served as principal deputy solicitor general of the United States since Jan. 21. He argued two cases this term: District Attorney's Office for the Third Judicial District v. Osborne, a question of post-conviction access to biological evidence, and Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District Number One v. Holder, a challenge to a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. While a professor Georgetown University Law Center, Katyal won the landmark Guantanamo Bay detainee case Hamdan v. Rumsfeld. He clerked for Justice Stephen Breyer.
