Out-of-staters pour into Maine for holiday weekend
AP
YORK, Maine -The Maine Turnpike had a jump in out-of-state motorists over the Labor Day weekend, giving the state's tourism industry a positive end-of-summer boost.
The Maine Turnpike Authority said Tuesday that northbound traffic at the York toll plaza at the southern end of the turnpike was 7 percent higher than the same day last year, suggesting a surge in out-of-state visitors. On Monday, southbound traffic at the plaza was up by nearly 5 percent.
Spokesman Dan Paradee said while out-of-state visitors poured into Maine, it appeared that more Mainers stayed at home.
Southbound traffic at the York toll plaza on Friday was down 11 percent from a year ago, suggesting fewer Mainers were leaving the state for the Labor Day holiday weekend.
