Nutrisystem Steps Up to Help Stop Diabetes with $100,000 Pledge
Weight Loss Leader to Contribute $5 for Every Person Who Joins New American Diabetes Association Movement
Business Wire
Nutrisystem, Inc. (NASDQ: NTRI), a leading developer of weight loss
products and services, today announced its company-wide support for the
recently launched Stop Diabetes
SM movement from the American
Diabetes Association. On the heels of the successful launch of
Nutrisystem D, its program designed to help people with type 2 diabetes
lose weight, Nutrisystem has implemented a $5.00 contribution for every
person who shares their story on the American Diabetes Association’s
Stop Diabetes website, up to $100,000 through December 31, 2009.
The Stop Diabetes movement, which launched on November 2nd, is designed
to educate Americans about the devastating, physical and emotional
impact of diabetes, elevate the sense of urgency around the disease and
inspire people to take action. Anyone can join the Stop Diabetes
movement by visiting
StopDiabetes.com
or calling the Association’s National Call Center at 1-800-DIABETES.
Currently, there are nearly 24 million Americans suffering from
diabetes. Nearly all adults with type 2 diabetes are overweight, and
more than half are obese.(1) If current trends continue, according to
the American Diabetes Association, one in three children born today will
face a future with diabetes.
“We fully support the American Diabetes Association in their fight to
stop diabetes and its deadly consequences from impacting more families
and individuals,” said Joe Redling, Chairman and CEO of Nutrisystem.
“Our hope is to get 20,000 people to join the Stop Diabetes movement
this month – to learn about strategies to prevent and manage diabetes,
like controlling their weight, and to become vocal advocates for the
movement and to encourage their friends, families and neighbors to join
as well. Until we make stopping diabetes a priority, this insidious
disease will continue to impact the lives of millions and millions of
people.”
“We are thrilled to have Nutrisystem play such an important role in the
launch of this historic movement for the Association,” said George
Huntley, Chair of the Board, American Diabetes Association. “The more
people we can get actively involved in fighting and stopping diabetes,
the more progress we will make. For far too long diabetes has been a
silent epidemic. With the help of Nutrisystem, we are giving a voice to
those impacted by this disease and declaring our intention to forever
change the future of diabetes.”
