National Media Advisory-Farmers of North America: Wallaceburg's Ship Has Come In
Market Wire
WALLACEBURG, CHATHAM-KENT -- (Marketwire) -- 07/09/09 -- Like many smaller communities along Canada's seacoasts, Great Lakes shores, and rivers, it appeared for many years that Wallaceburg's day as a shipping port was long past. The schooners and steamships were gone and big transport by-passed the historic port on southwestern Ontario's Sydenham River.
But, Chatham-Kent Council persisted in reclaiming the harbour and fighting to maintain railway links. The Wallaceburg Community Task Force had mobilized citizens to plan for a more prosperous future. The Farmers of North America (FNA) organization had been looking for innovative, cost-effective shipping options. And Marine Link Shipping had the expertise to do the job. As a result, Wallaceburg has entered the international shipping business, and all of Chatham-Kent and farmers across the country are expected to benefit.
On Thursday, July 16 at noon, the Farmers of North America will be receiving two barges carrying a shipment of fertilizer from Russia, the first, it is hoped, of many such shipments.
The entire community is invited to celebrate the event with a barbeque at noon at the harbour. At the same time, elected officials, the Wallaceburg Community Task Force, and the Farmers of North America will hold a news conference to discuss the future of the new venture and its economic impacts.
