SOUTH JORDAN, Utah -Disposable medical device maker Merit Medical Systems Inc. said Tuesday it received approval to market its Merit Laureate hydrophilic guide wire, which is used in inserting catheters.
Merit said the FDA has approved the device, and the company will begin selling it in January 2010. Merit said the guide wire can be used in inserting drainage catheters, dialysis catheters, and vascular catheters. The Laureate wire has a coating that gives it a slippery surface.
The company said the market for hydrophilic guide wires is worth $150 million to $200 million, and it estimated it will get about $30 million in sales from the Laureate wire.
In afternoon trading, Merit shares dipped 12 cents to $17.06.
