Librato Introduces Enterprise-Class Checkpoint/Restart Solution
Librato Availability Services Enables Application-Checkpoint/Migration/Restart with No Application or Operating System Modification, Resulting in High Application Availability and Increased Resource Utilization
Business Wire
Librato®, Inc., a leading provider of software solutions that increase
the utilization of cloud and data center resources, today announced
Librato Availability Services™ 2.0. Librato Availability Services is a
unique product that delivers robust, application-transparent checkpoint,
preemption, migration, and restart capabilities for serial and parallel
applications to protect against hardware and software failures and to
increase utilization of cluster resources. It requires no application or
operating system modification and integrates seamlessly with popular
schedulers including Runtime Design Automation’s Network Computer,
Platform Computing’s LSF, Sun’s Grid Engine and Altair’s PBS Pro. The
new release supports a wide range of applications, Ethernet and
InfiniBand interconnects, and a variety of MPI stacks, including HP-MPI
(Platform MPI), Open MPI and MVAPICH.
“As application workloads are increasing in complexity and size, data
center managers need enterprise-class solutions to increase resource
utilization and meet service level agreements,” said Andrea Casotto, CTO
of Runtime Design Automation. “Using Runtime Design Automation’s Network
Computer along with Availability Service enables customers to protect
valuable compute time and increase application quality of service even
in the face of unexpected failures or other interruptions.”
Jobs in grid environments that require long run times, possibly across
large numbers of compute nodes are often subject to high failure rates,
resulting in lower throughput and poor server utilization. With the
ability to save the entire state of a running application in real time,
Availability Services enables:
- Rapid recovery from hardware failures with minimal loss of compute cycles by restarting from a previous checkpoint
- Increased resource utilization and Quality of Service by allowing long-running jobs to be suspended and resumed in case higher priority jobs need to be scheduled
- Application fault tolerance by migrating entire applications or “ranks” of parallel jobs from servers that have failed or require maintenance to healthy servers
- Improved server utilization through load balancing, by migrating applications to less loaded servers
“Availability Services provides data center managers a commercial grade
checkpoint/restart solution to increase resource utilization and Quality
of Service in a wide-range of Linux-based application environments,”
said Fred van den Bosch, CEO of Librato, Inc. “Availability Services 2.0
significantly expands the range of supported applications and
configurations, making it possible to use one standardized mechanism for
protecting all applications without requiring changes to the application
code or operating system.”
