Intuitive Surgical says Guthart will become CEO

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -Robotic surgical device maker Intuitive Surgical Inc. said CEO Lonnie Smith will give up his post on Jan. 1, 2010, and be replaced by Chief Operating Officer Gary Guthart.
The company said Smith will retain his title as chairman of the board of directors, and Guthart will remain president of the company.
Smith, 64, has been with the da Vinci system maker since 1997. Guthart, 43, joined the company in April 1996 and became COO in February 2006.
Intuitive shares fell $1.51 to $257.61 in morning trading.
