EU to resume aid payments to Bulgaria
AP
BRUSSELS -The European Union has told Bulgaria's new prime minister that it will partly resume aid payments to Sofia after he supported reforms to tackle corruption and fraud.
The EU froze some euro150 million in aid to Bulgaria last year after finding that standard checks on how the money was being spent were not in place.
European Commission President Jose Barroso says while "weaknesses persist" in Bulgaria's ability to properly control EU aid payments, the EU executive will resume aid to farmers by the end of this year.
Prime Minister Boiko Borisov, who met Barroso at EU headquarters on Thursday, says his new government "will be very disciplined" on fast-tracking reforms to combat corruption and mismanagement. Borisov came to power in July.
Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007.
