FRANKFURT -German carmaker Daimler AG said Friday its Mercedes-Benz Cars division saw a 4 percent increase in global sales in October.
Daimler, based in Stuttgart, said the division, which includes the Mercedes-Benz and Smart brands, delivered 97,700 cars during the month compared with 93,800 in October 2008.
The Mercedes-Benz brand alone saw a 7 percent increase to 88,400 vehicles compared with 82,500 in October 2008. The compact Smart brand, however, saw an 18 percent decrease to 9,300 cars.
Daimler said sales in China of Mercedes-Benz Cars rose 84 percent to 6,800 cars for the month, and that it had already sold more cars there in 2009 than it had for the whole of 2008.
"Mercedes-Benz Cars will continue to grow at a dynamic rate in China, and we expect the increase for 2009 as a whole to amount to more than 50 percent," Joachim Schmidt, the head of sales and marketing of the Mercedes-Benz Cars division said in the report.
The Asia-Pacific region including China saw a 34 percent increase to 14,100 deliveries. South Korea and Australia saw 63 percent and 22 percent increases, while Japan saw a 7 percent decline.
The Mercedes-Benz brand alone had the best month of the year in the U.S., and Canadian sales of the brand also did well, Daimler said.
Overall, the company saw a 9 percent increase in the U.S. with 18,900 vehicles delivered. North American sales including the U.S. were up more than 10 percent to 21,600 vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz Cars sales in western Europe including Germany fell 2.3 percent and German sales fell 7.2 percent.
For the year to the end of September, the Mercedes-Benz Cars division's sales amounted to 923,300 cars, a decline of 14 percent from a year ago.
Shares of Daimler were 1.5 percent higher at euro33.15 in late Frankfurt trading.

IT IS INEVITABLE!....Bankruptcy for GM and Chrysler is the only rod that the UAW will understnd...yes, your heard it right, spare the rod and spoil the child. Well, UAW is Obama's child and yes, he has been spoiling all his paid voters by giving GM and Chrysler money that he knows will never be paid back. This money is being used to continue the payments to the UAW. But the rod of bankruptcy will finally give the UAW the spanking it deserves! Then, they will have to go out and actually do a day's work for a day's pay!

Overall, I personally favor unions, but what I dislike is that they are unwilling to hold their people responsible for the poor quality of their vehicles. I know a number of people who have told me that there are tons of drug users in the plants, needles in the bathrooms, etc..but the UAW keeps protecting these people. We need quality vehicles and quality employees. UAW and salaried. We need to get rid of the dead worod and keep those people who really believe in their company and will work hard and be proud of the vehicles they make.

A little bad Karma for Daimler to pay back. I am personally happy to hear that they are doing so poorly. They never intended to save Chrysler, they just grabbed all the cash flow and left. They stripped Chrysler. They came to the Unites States, brought all their cronies and purchased large estate sized homes with company money..spent $100 dollars on cigars and wild parties. They have their girlfriends as secretaries..they deserve the worse..they deserve to go out of business. Chrysler was doing better and could have survived without them.

You gotta be from Michigan ... you think the ONLY options for folks is FORD or GM?

Either that, or you've spent waaaaaaaay too much time watching Nascar races.

Blame the union blame the poor guy that goes to work does what he's told and what he is told is wrong it's the guy that does what he's told that is at fault. The mind set in America against the UAW is just wrong outdated backward thinking. Just look at FORD they have the same UAW workers same costs the same people that bargin for FORD bargin for GM and Chrysler yet FORD has no problem and took no loans. So where does that leave us. If your wise you would look at MANAGEMENT and unproductive salary labor cost. GM's problem is they feel the more steps on the ladder beneath their feet the more their worth. If they are dumb enough to jump into bankruptcy cause they just have no plan then FORD will be laughing all the way to the bank. Also they cry all about all of GM's product lines. Take a look at FORDS they have many are they making comments like oh we have to get rid of the taurus the mustang and the probe. NO THEY ARE NOT. MESSAGE TO GM AND FRITZ HENDERSON PULL YOU HEADS OUT OF YOUR REARS AND LEARN FROM FORD BECAUSE IF YOU GO INTO BANKRUPTCY FORD WILL BE LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS.
