Croatia: Gov't, protesting farmers seal deal
AP
ZAGREB, Croatia -Croatian government officials have promised more aid to farmers, who drove to the capital on tractors to demand subsidies, higher price for milk and wheat and a limited import of food.
After long negotiations Thursday, Economics Minister Damir Polancec said the government raised a price for milk, agreed to temporary ban import of dairy products and will provide higher subsidies.
Polancec says the agreement provides "maximum" aid and support in times of economic crisis.
One of the protest leaders, Ivica Miketek, says most of protesters' demands are met and has called on them to go back home.
Some of the farmers claim, however, that the deal wasn't satisfactory and have pledged to stay.
More than 200 farmers came to Zagreb on their tractors on Wednesday and spent the night here.
The farmers, who came from across the country, parked some of the tractors on a Zagreb avenue outside the Agriculture Ministry.
