Bulgaria's parliament reinstates central banker
AP
SOFIA, Bulgaria -Bulgaria's central bank governor has been reinstated by Parliament for a second six-year term, just a week after he resigned from his post.
Parliament voted 195-1 Wednesday to formally approve a second term for Ivan Iskrov as of Oct. 10. Fourteen lawmakers abstained.
Iskrov was elected governor of the Bulgarian National Bank in October 2003. In May, the previous Socialist-dominated parliament re-elected Iskrov for a second six-year term months before his term expired Oct. 10.
But last week, Iskrov surprisingly submitted his resignation following government calls that his early re-election was in breach of central bank law.
Lawmakers from the ruling GERB party motivated their support for Iskrov saying it was "in the name of the stability of the banking system."
