Bulgaria, Russia to review nuclear plant deal
AP
SOFIA, Bulgaria -Bulgaria's new conservative government and Russia have agreed to review existing contracts to build a new 2,000 megawatt nuclear power plant in the Balkan country.
Officials from the two countries say a revised deal would allow Bulgaria to privatize part of its stake in the euro4 billion ($5.9 billion) Belene nuclear plant on the Danube River.
But Bulgarian government officials have raised the possibility of scrapping the venture altogether.
Bulgaria currently holds a 51 percent stake in the nuclear plant project, while Germany's RWE AG holds 49 percent.
A contract with Russia's Attomstroyexport for the construction of the plant was signed in January 2008 by the previous Socialist government.
Officials from Bulgaria and Russia met Friday.
