BRASILIA, Brazil -Brazil has released a preliminary list of U.S. goods that could be hit with tariffs in response to a World Trade Organization ruling on illegal American cotton subsidies.
The WTO ruled in August that U.S. goods will face about $295 million in annual sanctions as a result of the United States' failure to eliminate the subsidies to its cotton growers.
The Brazilian government says fruits, juices and medicine are among 30 products that may receive tariff increases of up to 100 percent.
The final list is expected to be submitted to the WTO by Nov. 30.
The Brazilian government first brought the case to the WTO in 2002, alleging the U.S. paid out $3 billion to American farmers each year.
