Blizzards Will Bust Some Budgets, While Boosting Other Bottom Lines
Mother Nature's fury this winter has left a path of fiscal destruction that will linger far after the record-breaking snowfall starts to melt -- and she's not done yet. But for some businesses, blizzards mean opportunity.
Market Update
Greece, struggling with a worsening sovereign debt crisis, appears closer to a bailout by some combination of E.U. nations. The plan could reportedly be led by Germany due to the size of its economy and relatively strong financial position.
Dubai's sovereign debt problems have resurfaced as the kingdom reportedly plans to ask for a standstill on payments of $22 billion in debt issued by state-owned Dubai World.
The Dow surged Tuesday on reports the European Union is hatching a plan to end the Greek debt crisis. But just because the blue-chip index sits above 10,000 again doesn't mean the latest threat to equities is over. Investors should brace themselves for more tremors to come.
Honda Recall Adds to Japanese Auto Industry Woes, Big Boost for Chinese Carmakers
Shares in Asia closed higher Wednesday as plans to rescue Greece emerged. In China, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.1% and in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index added 0.7%. Japan's Nikkei 225 Index ended the day up 0.3%. Car recalls were the order of the day again today -- this time with Honda in the hot seat with the carmaker announcing the recall of more than 400,000 vehicles with faulty airbags.
Jonathan Tasini isn't expecting much financial support from the Wall Street machers. He thinks many of them should be in jail. Instead, this former reporter and labor organizer is hoping to tap into the deep well of anger toward Wall Street, more than a year into a financial crisis that has cost more than 250,000 New Yorkers their jobs.
Given the resurgent demand for coal, iron ore and copper thanks primarily to China, India and other developing economies, global mining is heating up. And this huge mining equipment maker stands to benefit.
Web giant Google unveiled a new social-networking product called Google Buzz, but initial reactions to this souped-up version of its Gmail service were not positive. Some wonder whether Google's new offering may be too little, too late to stem the explosive growth of Facebook and Twitter.
